Scarf and Filet Crochet
This illustration shows a most beautiful scarf with strips of linen on each tide of Filet crochet insertion, and each end finished with lace edge. The insertion is quite simple, and by observing a few general rules for Filet, one will easily be able to work from the block pattern, which is shown on the page. In this case, chain 138 stitches  for the foundation, the first space being made by making a treble crochet (t) (thread over once) in the ninth stitch from hook. A block (bl) is made by t in t, 2 t in space, and a space (sp) is made by t in t, 2 ch, t in t. Where more than one bl appears, the number of t should equal three times the number of spaces, plus 1 t. Always make 5 ch at the end of each row to turn.

Thus our first row will read: 2 sps. [ bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 4 sps, 1 bl, 5 sps, 3 bis, 1 sp, 3 bls, 3 sps. 1 bl, 3 sps, 2 bis, 4 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp. 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 2 sps. 2d row— 2 sps, r bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 3 sps, 4 bis, 1 sp, 1 bl, 2 sps, 2 bis, 7 sps, 2 bis, 4 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 2 sps. Continue, following the block pattern.

EDGE.—Chain 33. 1st row— (Worked from outside toward inside edge.) Treble in 9th st from hook (counting the st on hook) 8 more sp. 2d row—9 sp, ch n, turn. _3rd row—d in 9th it from hook, 10 sp. 4th row—9 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, ch 11. turn. 5th row—(1 in 9th st from hook, 2 sp, 3 bls, 7 sp. 6th row—5 sp, 4 bis, 4 sp, ch 11. turn. 7th row—d in 9th, 1 sp, 1 bl, 4 sp, 5 bl, 3 sp. 8th row—1 sp, 12 bis, 2 sp. ijth row—2 sp, 1 hi, 4 sp, 5 bl, 3 sp. roth row—5 sp, 4 bl, 4 sp. 11th row—3 sp, 3 bl, 7 sp. I2th row—9 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp. 13th row—11 sp. 14th row—9 sp. 15th row—9 sp. For next point begin again with 2d row of directions.

To work edge around points, make 2 d (see page 44) in 1st sp, picot (p) (ch 4, catch under 2 threads of last d), 2 more d in same sp, 1 d in next t, 2 d in next sp, * 2 d in next sp, 1 d in next d, (2 d, p, 2 d, p, 2 d) in next sp, 1 d in next t, 2 d in next sp; repeat from * once, and continue filling sp with d in same way. making 2 p on each corner, 1 p in centre of middle sp of the 3 at point of scallop, and also in centre of 3 sp between 2 scallops.
