Handkerchiefs using Baby Irish Insets |
The handkerchiefs in this article are so easy to make, and are so dainty, one is fully paid for the time spent on them.
Quite a novel idea is introduced, for the flowers and motifs are cut from Baby Irish all-over lace of the very best quality. Handkerchief linen of a very soft fine texture should be used for the foundation. Of course, it may be impossible to secure the exact motifs shown, but any dainty design will do. Arrange them according to fancy, or in some way suggested by the ones shown, and baste them carefully in place. With fine embroidery cotton follow the outline with fine running-stitches, and over these stitches, make a narrow row of close buttonholing. When finished cut the material from underneath, leaving a lacey effect.
Three different ways for finishing the edge are suggested. Number 154-17 has a narrow hemstitched hem, on the edge of which is sewed a narrow Armenian edge made as follows : Chain 4, * d (see page 44) in 3d st, t in 2d st, d t in 1st st, taking up both threads, ch 3 and repeal from *, each lime taking the d t in the corner of the last point. This edge would he pretty in a delicate shade (if pink or blue, with the motifs buttonholed with the corresponding color.
Design No. 154-18 is finished with double crochet over a rolled hem. with Armenian edge sewed on the edge of this. For the rolled hems, first draw a thread a little ways in from the edge, roll, and baste. Number 154-19 has crochet over rolled edge, then double crochet and picots.
