This pillow has quite an unusual and striking design, combining several different flowers, which necessitates the use of various colors and shades. But these are so skilfully placed the result is most harmonious.
This design has been reproduced in color and is shown on the cover of the magazine, from which one will be able to grain a clear idea in regard to the placing of the colors. This will also show very clearly the stitch directions used on each section. On the leaves, the stitches are made with one stroke of the needle, but on the bell-shaped flowers, the Kensington stitch is used, that is, long-and-short stitches, each row overlapping the previous one, to give a solid appearance. A very fine thread or silk is used on the flowers, while the outer section of the leaves is of heavier, with single stitches of the fine through the centre.
The whole motif is enclosed in an outlined circle of black, outside of which are parallel lines of black outlining, extending to the ends of the pillow.
The back of the pillow is of the same material as the top. Sew together three sides, leaving one open in which to insert the pillow form.
The material used is a tan Ramie linen. which is most suitable for sofa-pillows. It is very firm and serviceable, yet of soft texture, making it very easy to embroider. A piece of the same material is used for the back.
A selection of materials to work with is very essential. The needle should be large enough to carry the thread easily, otherwise it will pull tile material when drawn through ; and it should not be too large, or holes will be left in the material, making a very rough-looking piece of work.
By using either the transfer or perforated pattern, one will very easily be able to stamp the design at home. The most particular part is placing the pattern exactly even on the material, and being sure every line is clearly stamped before removing it. Heavy weights, like flat-irons, are used for holding the pattern in place.
