A rather wide hem is turned at the top, and instead of ivory rings, crocheted loops are made, in which to run the draw-ribbon or cord, as preferred.

Venetian Handbag No. 154-11

Take a piece of linen 11 x 51/2 inches. Turn a hem all around, half an inch wide, draw two threads and hemstitch around. Then, to mark off the squares by which to do the cross-stitch, cut a thread along the line of hemstitching and draw it. Do this at both side and end, counting the threads between, so the squares will be even. Cross-stitch a space 31/2 by 3 inches above the hem on one end. Embroider a round figure, half an inch in diameter in every corner, and in the cen¬tre of the cross-stitched square. Make a Venetian rose around the centre figure with coarse, white embroidery cotton. Make a twisted cord with twelve strands of No. 5 Cordonnet crochet cotton, 16 inches long. Turn up 3 inches for the bag, and run a whalebone in the hem. Fold over the embroidered end and sew the cord in the upper corners. Crochet two balls together and sew to upper and lower corners.
