MATERIAL. — A yard and a half of novelty braid, medium fine; No. 30 Cordonnet crochet cotton, at 23 cents a ball; a steel crochet-hook, No. 8; and a 14-inch square of linen.
Join the ends of the braid neatly. Fasten thread in first p of a medallion, 1st row—Chain 3, d in each p of the medallion, with 3 ch between, ch 5, t in each p of next medallion with 2 ch between, ch 5, d with 3 ch between in each p of next medallion, and repeat to end of the row, joining last 5 ch to p in which work started. There should be an even number of medallions in the braid. 2d row— Break thread and fasten in first t of second medallion, ch 5, t in t, ch 2, t in t. ch 2, t in next 2 ch, (ch 2, t in t) 3 times, ch 5, d in first 3 ch, (ch 3, d in 3 ch) 4 times, ch 5, t in t, and repeat to end of row, join last 5 ch to 4th of 3 ch. 3d row—Chain 5, t in t, ch 2, t in t, ch 2, t in t, ch 2, t in same t as last, (ch 2, t in t) 3 times, ch 5, d in 3 ch, (ch 3 d in 3 ch) 3 times, ch 5, t in t, and repeat. Join as in last row. 4th row—Chain 5, t in t, (ch 2, t in t) twice, ch 2, t in 2 ch, (ch 2, t in t) 4 times, ch 5, d in 3 ch, (ch 3, d in 3 ch) twice, ch 5, join. 5th row—Same as the 3d, with 1 more t each side of the centre, and 2 of the 3 ch in the next medallion. 6th row—Same as the 4th, with 1 more t each side of the centre and 1 of 3 ch in the point. 7th row—Twelve t with 3 cli between in each scallop and d t in 3 ch of the point. 8th roiv—t in each t, with 3 ch between, ch 5, d in d t, ch 5, and repeat, 9th row —t in each t, with 3 ch between, in first scallop, then the same in next scallop, with no ch between scallops. 10th row— (si st, 4 d, si st) in each 3 ch.
For the inner edge, join to first p of a medallion, ch 3, over, take a st in next p, over and through 2 sts, over and through all the sts on the hook, ch 3 over and take a st in next p, over and through 2 sts, over and take a st in next p, over and through 2 sts, over and through all sts on the hook; repeat, making 3 groups over each medallion with 3 ch between, but no ch between medallions.
The centrepiece measures 18 inches.
